Things to Do
We are excited to invite y’all to our wedding in Jackson. We want the weekend to be a great memory for each of you as much as it will be for us. This MAP will guide you to Wedding Events as well as places to explore beyond the wedding festivities.
Jackson is home to good music, good food, and good writers. A few highlights include:
FARISH STREET - the historic African-American commercial district downtown, is seeing a slow resurgence and is home to the original (move over Atlanta) Big Apple Inn with their pig ear sandwiches and tamales, go here for lunch.
IRON HORSE GRILL – this restaurant is a short walk under the RR tracks from the Hotel and besides good food and drinks has a pretty well done permanent exhibit of Mississippi musicians upstairs that we highly recommend checking out.
HAL & MAL’S – Have you heard of the Sweet Potato Queens and Jackson’s famous St. Paddy’s Day Parade? The two are not necessarily synonymous but Mal here is responsible for the parade each year and his restaurant has been a staple on the Jackson scene for good music, good food, and good drinks since 1985.
FONDREN – is Jackson’s “hub of artistic expression,” an area that has seen inspiring revitalization in the last 20 years. We highly recommend getting coffee, lunch, a drink, and strolling the shops and galleries of Fondren.
OLD CAPITOL MUSEUM – this is a museum about the Old Capitol building located at the east end of Capitol St. Emily spent many an afternoon playing the Senate chamber and coloring with heady markers on the floor of her Dad’s office here.
EUDORA WELTY HOUSE AND GARDEN – World renowned regional writer and photographer, Eudora Welty was a fixture in Jackson. After a stint in New York, Eudora came home and lived out her days here in the house her father built. Touring the house and gardens today really opens up the unique world of Eudora and life in Jackson .
There’s also a great Museum of Natural Science, Ag Museum (a fun glimpse into small towns of the past) and the new Mississippi Children’s Museum, good places for grownups and kids alike.

GETTING AROUND
Jackson is a car-centric city. Although cabs, and recently Uber, are definitely available, and restaurants are within easy walking distance of the hotel, if you want to get out and explore Jackson beyond the wedding festivities (which we highly encourage) you will probably want access to a car.
MISSISSIPPI GUIDE
Many of you will be experiencing Mississippi for your first time and we’d like to encourage you to absorb as much of the south as possible, if you can come a few days early or stay a few days longer to explore the city, the state, or the region (Jackson is a train ride or a 3 hour drive from either Memphis or New Orleans).
